The Verve Living System gives you control over lighting, temperature, and energy usage in any living space.  Under the Masco Corporation umbrella, this system is available in a residential, higher education, and hospitality setting.  Lighting consumes up to 34 percent of electricity in the United States and with the cost of electricity on the rise, this product comes in handy.

The Verve System makes reducing your energy use practically effortless.  If you plan to be gone for the day, you just simply let your home know.  Click a single switch to set the air conditioning to eco-mode and switch off power outlets connected to energy-draining devices such as TVs or game systems.  The Verve Living System also sets the right mood for your home. With one click, you can turn on bright task lighting, perfect for preparing a meal for guests. When the door bell rings, a second click is all it takes to set a dramatic, softly lit scene for entertaining.  You can also keep a switch in your car allowing your house to come to life as you pull up the driveway.  Completely adaptable to fit your needs, this product reaches every audience.

BOTTLING GREEN

PepsiCo has developed the world’s first PET plastic bottle made entirely from plant-based, renewable resources.  The new “green” design will launch in 2012 and is expected to significantly reduce the beverage company’s carbon footprint.  The eco-friendly bottle is made from raw materials such as pine bark and corn husks.

Not to be outdone, Coca-Cola has been using and selling a bottle in nine countries made out of 30 percent sugar cane from Brazil.  Coke is also working on converting the remaining 70% to a plant-based material.  The company’s goal is to convert all its plastic bottles to plant by 2020.  More importantly, Coca-Cola has created a new business stream for itself.  The company entered into a licensing agreement with HJ Heinz Company earlier in 2011 whereby the ketchup maker will use the “plant bottle” for its products.

STAY GREEN THIS SUMMER

The sun is shining, pools are sparkling, and the smell of suntan lotion is in the air.  Ladies and gentlemen, summer is here!  Here are a few quick tips to stay green this season:

Watch Your Thermostat - Americans spend $11 billion each year on cooling their homes, and air conditioners release 100 million tons of carbon dioxide in the air annually.  Being responsible with your thermostat helps the environment and keeps costs down.

Grill To Perfection -  Propane burns much cleaner than charcoal, but charcoal gives food a smokey punch that propane just can’t bring to the table.  If charcoal is a must for you grill lovers, use natural products like Cowboy Charcoal.  It’s a much cleaner alternative to traditional charcoal.

Party Smart - Summer backyard parties and plastic plates and cups often go hand-in-hand, but it doesn’t have to be.  Use festive reusable dishes that make a statement with friends, family, and the environment.

Water Wisely - Watering your lawn in the summer is essential to keeping your grass looking fresh and keeping yourself from being blacklisted with neighbors.  Be smart by watering your lawn in the morning when it’s often coolest and the root system has the best chance to quench itself.  Use a rain barrel or other device to collect and store rain water to be used when you need it most.  Unlike tap water, salts and minerals are absent in rainwater and allows your grass maximum absorption.

NO MORE JUNK MAIL

More than 41.5 billion pieces of mail advertisements are produced and distributed in the United States every year.   It takes 100 million trees to create all this bulk mail, which is enough to deforest the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every four months.  You can keep your mailbox tidy and protect our trees by taking a few steps to reduce your junk mail.

1.) Contact the Direct Marketing Association to be removed from many companies’ mass marketing mailing lists for up to five years.

2.) To stop delivery of Yellow Pages, enter your zip code at Catalog Choice to see contact information for all Yellow Pages.

3.) Contact Val-Pak Coupons to be removed from their mailing list.

OCEAN SHIPPING CONTAINERS

What was once a vehicle to transport goods safely across the ocean, has now become an architectural structure for offices, homes, studios, and dormitories.  Not only do residential and commercial builders enjoy a cost savings when using these modular structures, they take advantage of being environmentally efficient when using a recycled container.  A new shipping container costs on average $6,000, while a used container costs as little as $1500 depending upon its condition.  Take a look at these ocean containers being used in a creative way:

GET CREATIVE ON EARTH DAY

What began as a simple environment teach-in by Unites States Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, quickly became known as Earth Day around America .  In 1990, Earth Day went international and is now celebrated in over 175 countries. April 22nd is a day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment.  There are plenty of ways to honor Earth Day.  You can ride your bike to work, plant a tree, make a commitment to learn about the environment, begin recycling if you haven’t already done so, or recruit some of your neighbors to help pick-up litter in the neighborhood.  The list of activities you can engage in is endless.  Bottom line—pick an activity that best suits you, but do pick an activity.  Give the Earth some much deserved love this Friday.

I plan to celebrate Earth Day in a few different ways, including spreading environment awareness to some of my loved ones.  Botanical Paperworks makes eco-friendly paper products that grow into flowers when planted.

From bookmarks, invitations, business cards, to birth announcements, this creative company has thought of it all.  The seed cards are made with post-consumer waste and are infused with wildflower seeds.

SPRING CLEANING

Spring is finally upon us, and that can mean plenty of different things to everyone.  For kids, that can only mean two things—summer is almost here and school is almost out.  For us responsible grown-ups, it’s a time to remove those winter blues and freshen up our homes for the warmer months ahead.  Spring is practically synonymous with cleaning.  Even fair-weather cleaners get an inexplicable urge to vacuum window seals, rearrange furniture, and tackle those clogged gutters.

I am in the process of making my home look and feel crisp this spring, and I am using all environmentally responsible products to accomplish just that.  Why go green?  The Consumers Guide to Effective Environmental Choices states that cleaning products and services are the leading source of toxic air pollution in our homes.  According to Seventh Generation, green household product distributor, “If every household in the United States replaced just one bottle of 100 oz. ultra petroleum-based liquid laundry detergent with our 100 oz. vegetable based product, we could save 460,000 barrels of oil—enough to heat and cool 27,000 U.S. homes for a year.”

Go green this spring by using baking soda, lemon juice, or synthetic-free cleaning products.  There are plenty of options available that won’t empty your pockets and will allow you to clean responsibly.
